Quick Answer: How Do MSMEs Protect Themselves From Defaulters?

Indian MSMEs reduce default and payment risk through four steps: verifying a buyer's financial and payment background before supplying goods or credit, running due diligence on new business partners before signing an agreement, pursuing the correct recovery route (the MSME ODR portal, MSEFC arbitration, or a Section 138 cheque-bounce complaint) as soon as a payment is delayed, and correcting any inaccurate CIBIL or credit-bureau reporting promptly using the RBI's 30-day dispute resolution framework. GRO-MSME's No More Defaulters framework covers all four.

The GRO-MSME Business Safety Net: 4-Step Protection & Recovery Framework

01 — BUYER RISK CHECK

Know Your Buyer Before You Supply

Before you dispatch goods or extend credit, understand who you are dealing with. GRO-MSME can help you assess the available business, financial, payment and reputation information to identify potential warning signs.

Our support includes:

  • Pre-supply buyer verification
  • Business & background checks
  • Available defaulter / credit risk checks
  • Payment risk assessment
  • Risk report & decision support

Don't ask after the default, "Why didn't I check?" — check before you supply.

02 — PAYMENT RECOVERY

Payment Stuck? Don't Just Keep Following Up

When a buyer delays or refuses payment, every day matters. GRO-MSME helps MSMEs understand their recovery options and coordinate appropriate professional support for recovering outstanding dues.

Our support includes:

  • Outstanding payment assessment
  • Document & transaction review
  • Recovery strategy
  • Legal notice / professional assistance, where appropriate
  • MSME payment recovery guidance, including filing on the MSME ODR portal
  • Support for appropriate statutory/legal remedies

Your outstanding payment is not just an amount — it's your working capital, your employee salary, your supplier payment and your business growth.

03 — PARTNER DUE DILIGENCE

Partnership Se Pehle — Puri Tasalli

A business partner can accelerate your growth — or become your biggest risk. Before entering into a relationship with a supplier, distributor, investor, JV partner or strategic business partner, know the available facts.

GRO-MSME helps you assess:

  • Company background
  • Financial health indicators
  • Legal & compliance information
  • Business reputation
  • Ownership / promoter background
  • Available litigation / risk indicators
  • Business relationship risk

Trust is important — but smart business trusts after verification. Verify. Assess. Then partner.

04 — CREDIT & DEFAULTER ISSUE SUPPORT

Facing a CIBIL / Bank Defaulter Issue?

An adverse credit record can affect your ability to obtain working capital, business loans and future finance. If you believe your credit information or bank-related reporting contains an error, discrepancy or unresolved issue, GRO-MSME can help you understand the issue and coordinate the appropriate professional/documentation support.

Our support may include:

  • CIBIL / credit report analysis
  • Identification of discrepancies
  • Bank / lender documentation review
  • Representation & documentation support
  • Legal/professional assistance where required
  • Resolution follow-up

Under the RBI's compensation framework (circular RBI/2023-24/72, effective 26 April 2024), a credit information dispute must be resolved within a combined 30 calendar days — 9 days by the Credit Information Company, 21 days by the bank/lender — failing which ₹100 per day of delay is payable to the complainant. A credit issue should not become a permanent business identity. Understand the problem, correct the record where justified, and rebuild your financial credibility.

No More Defaulters — FAQs

How can I verify a buyer before supplying goods on credit?

Before extending credit, review the buyer's available business registration, financial and payment-history information, and check for known credit risk or defaulter indicators. GRO-MSME helps MSMEs assess this available information and prepare a risk report before dispatch, subject to the limits of publicly and professionally available data.

What can I do if my CIBIL report shows incorrect or unresolved defaulter information?

You can raise a dispute directly with the credit bureau (such as CIBIL) or your reporting bank. Under the RBI's compensation framework effective 26 April 2024, Credit Information Companies and lenders must resolve a credit-report dispute within a combined 30 calendar days, failing which the complainant is entitled to compensation of ₹100 per day of delay. GRO-MSME can help you understand the discrepancy and coordinate the appropriate documentation and professional support.

What legal options does an MSME have for delayed payment recovery?

MSME suppliers can file a delayed payment complaint on the MSME ODR portal (which replaced MSME SAMADHAAN for new filings from 15 October 2025), which is heard by the state's Micro and Small Enterprises Facilitation Council under Section 15/16 of the MSMED Act, 2006. Where a cheque has bounced, a complaint under Section 138 of the Negotiable Instruments Act may also be an available remedy. GRO-MSME helps assess which route fits the facts and coordinates appropriate professional or legal support.

How do I check a business partner's background before a partnership or joint venture?

Before entering a partnership, distributorship, investment or joint venture, it helps to review the counterparty's available company registration, financial health indicators, promoter background, litigation history and business reputation. GRO-MSME helps MSMEs assess this available information before a relationship is finalised.

Does GRO-MSME directly provide legal recovery or credit-repair services?

No. GRO-MSME provides business risk advisory, document review and coordination support. Where legal notices, arbitration, litigation or formal credit-bureau representation are required, GRO-MSME coordinates access to the appropriate professional or legal support rather than providing such services itself.
