GRO-MSME provides advisory and application support. Certification and subsidy are awarded under the ZED scheme by the Ministry of MSME and the Quality Council of India; GRO-MSME does not issue certificates or guarantee a level.

What Is ZED Certification?

ZED, short for Zero Defect Zero Effect, is a certification scheme of the Ministry of MSME, implemented by the Quality Council of India, that helps MSMEs produce without defects and without harming the environment. MSMEs first take the ZED Pledge and can then apply for Bronze, Silver or Gold certification. Udyam-registered MSMEs get a subsidy of 50% to 80% on the certification cost, depending on their size.

ZED Certification Levels and Cost

Every MSME takes the ZED Pledge first, then applies for the level it can meet. You can upgrade before your certificate expires.

ZED Subsidy on Certification Cost

The subsidy depends on the size of your enterprise. Additional subsidy applies to some categories.

ZED certification subsidy structure (as published on the official ZED site)
Type of enterprise Subsidy on cost of certification Additional subsidy
Micro enterprise 80% +10% for MSMEs owned by women or SC/ST entrepreneurs, or located in the North East, Himalayan, LWE, island or aspirational-district regions; +5% for SFURTI or MSE-CDP cluster members
Small enterprise 60% Same additional subsidy as above
Medium enterprise 50% Same additional subsidy as above

The ₹10,000 joining reward is adjusted against the certification cost first, and the subsidy then applies to the balance. It is valid for one year after taking the ZED Pledge. Source: ZED official site.

The ZED Certification Process

  1. Register and take the Pledge

Log in on the ZED portal with your Udyam number and mobile, then take the ZED Pledge.

  2. Apply for a level

Choose Bronze, Silver or Gold and apply online. You must meet all requirements of that level.

  3. Assessment

An accredited assessment agency reviews your unit. If there is a non-conformity, you get time to close it.

  4. Certificate and renewal

The certificate is issued on the assessors’ findings. After expiry, renew or upgrade to keep the benefits.

Beyond the Certificate: Handholding and Technology Support

MSMEs that hold at least a Bronze certificate can apply for handholding support of up to ₹5 lakh per MSME. Of this, up to ₹2 lakh can be used for handholding and consultancy support, and up to ₹3 lakh for technology upgradation towards zero-effect solutions, pollution control and cleaner technology.

This is where certification turns into practical improvement: less rework, lower energy and waste costs, and a stronger record for buyers.

ZED Certification: Frequently Asked Questions

What is ZED certification?

ZED stands for Zero Defect Zero Effect. It is the Ministry of MSME’s MSME Sustainable certification scheme, implemented by the Quality Council of India, that encourages defect-free production with minimal environmental impact. Certification is available at Bronze, Silver and Gold levels.

Is ZED certification the same as ISO 9001?

No. ZED is the Ministry of MSME’s certification scheme for MSMEs, with levels and subsidies linked to Udyam Registration. ISO 9001 is an international quality management standard certified by accredited certification bodies. They are separate certifications, and some buyers ask for ISO 9001 as well; Early Grow’s ISO certification service covers ISO 9001 and related standards.

Who is eligible for ZED certification?

MSMEs registered on the Udyam portal are eligible to participate. Each unit under one Udyam Registration applies for certification separately to receive the subsidy and benefits.

How much does ZED certification cost?

The cost of certification is ₹10,000 for Bronze, ₹40,000 for Silver and ₹90,000 for Gold, before subsidy and the joining reward.

How much subsidy is available for ZED certification?

The subsidy on the cost of certification is 80% for micro, 60% for small and 50% for medium enterprises. An additional 10% applies to MSMEs owned by women or SC/ST entrepreneurs or located in specified regions, and an additional 5% for SFURTI or MSE-CDP cluster members.

What is the ZED Pledge and joining reward?

The ZED Pledge is a pre-commitment by an MSME to uphold Zero Defect Zero Effect practices. After taking it, an MSME gets a limited-purpose joining reward of ₹10,000, usable once against a certification within one year. It is deducted from the certification cost before the subsidy is applied.

What are the ZED certification levels?

There are three levels: Bronze, Silver and Gold. An MSME first takes the ZED Pledge and can then apply for any level it feels it can meet, and can upgrade before its certificate expires.

Is there support after certification?

MSMEs with at least a Bronze certificate can apply for handholding support of up to ₹5 lakh per MSME, of which up to ₹2 lakh is for handholding and consultancy and up to ₹3 lakh for technology upgradation.

Does GRO-MSME issue ZED certificates?

No. Certification is awarded under the ZED scheme. GRO-MSME provides advisory and application support and does not guarantee a certification level.
