What Is GeM Registration for Sellers?

GeM registration is the process by which a business becomes an approved seller or service provider on the Government e-Marketplace, India’s online portal for government procurement. Registration on GeM is free of charge. You need your identity details (Aadhaar or personal PAN), the business PAN, an email address and bank account details. Udyam and startup details are optional, but MSEs and startups get benefits when they add them.

Before You Start: Keep These Ready

Having these ready avoids most stuck registrations.

Why GeM Registrations Get Stuck

Name mismatch across documents

The name on PAN, bank account and business proof does not match, so verification fails.

Aadhaar mobile not linked

The OTP goes to a number you no longer use, or no mobile is linked.

Incomplete profile

Address, bank or category details are left blank, so you cannot bid.

Missing ITR for bids

Established businesses need three years of returns to take part in bids.

Catalogue not ready

Products are listed with vague specifications or wrong categories, so buyers cannot find them.

Ignoring bid conditions

Experience, turnover or EMD conditions are missed, and the bid is rejected. Startups and MSEs may have relaxations.

Benefits for MSMEs and Startups on GeM

No registration charges

GeM does not charge a fee for registering as a seller.

MSE purchase advantage

Government buyers must buy a certain percentage of products from MSEs every year.

Startup relaxations

Relaxation of prior experience and prior turnover, and exemption from submitting EMD.

One portal, many buyers

Central and state departments buy online through the same marketplace.

Transparent process

Online catalogues, bids and orders reduce paperwork.

Room to grow

Add NSIC registration and other vendor registrations for wider tender access.

After Registration: How to Win Your First Order

Registration only opens the door. Government buyers search the catalogue, so clear titles, accurate specifications, correct categories and competitive prices matter. Keep your profile documents up to date, respond quickly to bids, and read every bid condition on experience, turnover, EMD and delivery before you quote.

GRO-MSME helps you set up your catalogue, read tender documents, prepare bid papers and follow the e-tendering process. See all GRO-MSME services for related support such as vendor registration and government scheme advisory.

GeM Registration and Tender Support: Frequently Asked Questions

How do I register as a seller on GeM?

Go to the GeM portal, choose seller registration and complete the details: Aadhaar or personal PAN with a linked mobile number, business PAN, email, and bank account with IFSC. Companies add their CIN. MSMEs can add their Udyam number and startups their DPIIT number. GRO-MSME helps you complete and check the details.

Is there a fee for GeM registration?

No. GeM states that there are no charges or fees for getting registered as a seller.

What documents are required for GeM registration?

Identity details through Aadhaar or personal PAN, business PAN, an active email address, and bank account and IFSC details. Companies need a CIN. Udyam and DPIIT details are optional, and GSTIN is optional for registration but useful for interstate business.

Do I need Udyam Registration to sell on GeM?

It is optional for registration, but adding your Udyam number lets GeM treat you as an MSE, which helps because government buyers are required to buy a certain percentage of products from MSEs every year.

What do I need to take part in bids on GeM?

A seller whose business is older than 24 months must submit income tax returns for the last 3 years for bid participation. Startups get relaxations on prior experience and turnover and an exemption from EMD.

Why was my GeM registration rejected or stuck?

The usual causes are mismatched names across PAN, bank and business documents, an Aadhaar mobile number that is not linked, and an incomplete profile. GRO-MSME can review your details before you resubmit.

Can GRO-MSME help with tender documentation?

Yes. GRO-MSME supports e-tendering, tender documentation, vendor registration and related registrations for MSMEs. See our page on all GRO-MSME services for the full list.

Does GRO-MSME guarantee government orders?

No. GRO-MSME provides advisory and documentation support. Orders and tender awards are decided by government buyers under their own rules.
