What Is a Commercial Vehicle Loan?

A commercial vehicle loan is a secured loan from a bank or NBFC to buy a vehicle used for business, such as a truck, tipper, bus, van or light commercial vehicle. The vehicle is hypothecated to the lender until the loan is repaid, and the borrower usually pays a margin (down payment) and repays in monthly EMIs over a few years. Lenders assess the borrower’s transport experience, the expected income from the vehicle, existing loans and credit history. Loans are available for new and used vehicles and for adding vehicles to a fleet.

What Do Lenders Ask for, by Vehicle Type?

1Trucks and trailers (goods carriers)

Lenders want to see where the vehicle will run and who the freight is for: a transport contract, attachment with a logistics company or a record of trips. For national routes, permits and route plans matter. First-time buyers without transport experience may be asked for a higher margin or a guarantor.

2Tippers and construction vehicles

Income depends on project work, so lenders look at the construction or mining contracts the vehicle will serve and the seasonality of that work. See also contractor and project finance.

3Buses (school, staff and tourist)

Lenders ask for the route or contract, for example with a school or a company, along with the permit type. Stable contract income usually supports a better application.

4Light commercial vehicles and pick-ups

Common for traders, distributors and last-mile delivery. Lenders look at your own business income or delivery contracts, for example with e-commerce or FMCG distributors.

5Used vehicles

Age and condition drive the loan amount. Keep the registration certificate, fitness certificate, permit, insurance and service history ready; lenders often value the vehicle independently.

What Are the Eligibility Considerations?

Each lender has its own policy. These are general points, not a lender’s rules.

What strengthens an application

  • Experience in transport or an existing fleet with a clean repayment record
  • Contracts or regular freight showing where the income will come from
  • A healthy credit score and bank statements with steady inflows
  • Margin money ready for the down payment
  • Udyam and GST registration for the business

What can hold it back

  • Missed EMIs on existing vehicle loans
  • No proof of how the vehicle will earn
  • Income in cash only, not visible in the bank account
  • Old or poorly maintained used vehicles
  • Too many loan enquiries in a short period

What Documents Are Usually Required?

Lists vary by lender and vehicle. Tick what you already have.

Commercial Vehicle Loan: Frequently Asked Questions

What is the eligibility for a truck loan?

Lenders usually look at your transport experience or existing fleet, the income the truck will earn (contracts or freight records), your credit history and repayment of existing loans, and your ability to pay the margin. First-time buyers may need a higher down payment or a guarantor. Each lender sets its own criteria.

How much down payment is needed for a commercial vehicle loan?

It depends on the lender, the vehicle and your profile. Lenders finance a share of the vehicle’s cost and the rest is paid by you as margin. Used vehicles and first-time buyers usually need a larger margin.

Can I get a loan for a used commercial vehicle?

Yes. Many banks and NBFCs finance used commercial vehicles. The loan amount depends on the vehicle’s age, condition and valuation, and you will need its RC, fitness certificate, permit and insurance.

How is the EMI of a commercial vehicle loan calculated?

The EMI depends on the loan amount (vehicle cost minus margin), the interest rate and the tenure, using the standard reducing-balance formula. The estimator on this page shows the calculation; it is not a quote.

Is there a government scheme for commercial vehicle loans?

There is no single central subsidy for commercial vehicles. Some state schemes and MSME schemes may apply to specific borrowers, and small businesses may qualify for loans under MUDRA or CGTMSE cover depending on the lender. GRO-MSME can check what applies to you.

What documents are needed for a commercial vehicle loan?

Usually KYC, business proof, bank statements, ITR where available, proof of transport experience, the dealer’s quotation, and contracts or freight records. For used vehicles, the RC, fitness certificate, permit and insurance are also needed.

Does GRO-MSME give vehicle loans?

GRO-MSME does not lend. It helps you prepare your application and approaches partner lenders through Early Grow Advisory Services. The lender decides approval, rate and terms.
