GST registration is granted by the tax authorities on the GST portal, and there is no government fee. GRO-MSME provides application and advisory support; approval and any queries are the tax officer’s decision.
Who Needs GST Registration?
A business must register for GST when its aggregate turnover in a financial year crosses the threshold: ₹40 lakh for suppliers of goods only in most states, ₹20 lakh for services or mixed supplies (and for goods in Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Puducherry, Sikkim, Telangana and Uttarakhand), and ₹10 lakh in Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland and Tripura. Some businesses must register at any turnover under Section 24 of the CGST Act, for example those making inter-state supplies of goods. Registration is free on the GST portal and gives a 15-character, PAN-based GSTIN.

What Is the GST Registration Limit?
The threshold depends on what you supply and where you are registered.
| Where your business is | Goods only | Services, or goods and services |
|---|---|---|
| Most states and UTs | ₹40 lakh | ₹20 lakh |
| Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Puducherry, Sikkim, Telangana, Uttarakhand | ₹20 lakh | ₹20 lakh |
| Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland, Tripura | ₹10 lakh | ₹10 lakh |
Section 22 of the CGST Act and Notification 10/2019-Central Tax. The ₹40 lakh limit does not apply to some goods, such as ice cream, pan masala and tobacco products. Confirm the current position on the GST portal.
Which Type of GST Registration Do You Need?
Choosing the wrong type can mean higher tax or compliance you did not need.
| Type | Who it suits | Key point |
|---|---|---|
| Regular taxpayer | Most businesses above the threshold, and those selling to GST-registered buyers | Charge GST, claim input tax credit, file regular returns |
| Composition scheme | Small manufacturers and traders up to ₹1.5 crore turnover (₹75 lakh in special category states); service providers up to ₹50 lakh | Tax at a fixed rate on turnover; no input tax credit; cannot collect GST from buyers; no inter-state outward supplies |
| Voluntary registration | Businesses below the threshold that want to claim input tax credit or sell to registered buyers | Same obligations as a regular taxpayer once registered |
| Casual taxable person | Businesses supplying for a short period in a state where they have no fixed place, such as exhibitions | Registration for a limited period with advance tax deposit |
Composition eligibility has further conditions; check before opting.

Once approved, the GSTIN is issued and the registration certificate can be downloaded from the portal.
What Documents Are Required for GST Registration?

Wrong business description
Goods or services codes that do not match the actual business.

Some businesses must register at any turnover.
What documents are required for GST registration?
Usually the PAN of the business, Aadhaar and photographs of the proprietor, partners or directors, proof of constitution, proof of the principal place of business (with the owner’s NOC for rented premises), and authorisation for the signatory. Bank details can often be added after registration.
Is there a fee for GST registration?
No. There is no government fee for GST registration on the GST portal.
How long does GST registration take?
The officer normally approves or raises a query within 7 working days. Where Aadhaar authentication is not completed or physical verification is needed, the period is 30 days.
Can a sole proprietor get GST registration?
Yes. A proprietorship registers on the proprietor’s PAN, with the proprietor’s Aadhaar, photograph and proof of the business address.
Who must register for GST even below the threshold?
Section 24 of the CGST Act lists compulsory cases, including persons making inter-state taxable supplies of goods, casual taxable persons, persons liable under reverse charge, and certain e-commerce operators and sellers. Check whether any case applies to you.
Should I choose the composition scheme?
It can reduce compliance for small businesses selling mainly to consumers, but you cannot collect GST from buyers or claim input tax credit, and you cannot make inter-state outward supplies. It suits some businesses and not others; GRO-MSME can help you compare.
