Udyam Registration is free on the official portal, udyamregistration.gov.in, and you can do it yourself. GRO-MSME provides assistance and checks; it is not a government office and cannot change how the portal classifies your business.

What Is Udyam Registration?

Udyam Registration is the online registration of micro, small and medium enterprises with the Ministry of MSME. It is free, based on the Aadhaar of the proprietor, partner or authorised signatory, and linked to the business’s PAN and, where applicable, GSTIN. It gives a permanent Udyam Registration Number and an e-certificate, and it does not need renewal. The enterprise is classified as micro, small or medium from its investment and turnover, using data from the income tax and GST systems. Banks, government buyers and many schemes use it to confirm MSME status.

How Is an Enterprise Classified Under Udyam?

An enterprise is classified by both investment in plant and machinery or equipment and annual turnover. It moves to the higher category if it crosses either limit.

MSME classification effective 1 April 2025
Category Investment in plant and machinery or equipment Annual turnover
Micro Up to ₹2.5 crore Up to ₹10 crore
Small Up to ₹25 crore Up to ₹100 crore
Medium Up to ₹125 crore Up to ₹500 crore

Limits notified by the Ministry of MSME (S.O. 1364(E), 21 March 2025), effective 1 April 2025. Exports are excluded when turnover is calculated.

Who Needs Udyam Registration?

Manufacturers

Units that want MSME-linked loans, subsidies or ZED certification.

Service businesses

Consultants, contractors, transporters and other service providers.

Traders

Retail and wholesale traders can register; they are counted as MSMEs for priority sector lending.

Tender and B2B suppliers

Suppliers who want MSE benefits in public procurement or protection against delayed payments.

How Does Udyam Registration Work?

The whole process is online and self-declared. The detailed screen-by-screen steps are in our Udyam Registration online guide.

  1. Aadhaar verification

The proprietor, managing partner or authorised signatory verifies Aadhaar with an OTP on the Udyam portal.

  2. PAN validation

The business PAN is validated. Investment and turnover figures are picked up from the income tax and GST systems where available.

  3. Enterprise details

You enter the business name, type of organisation, address, bank details, activity (manufacturing or services) and NIC codes, and the number of employees.

  4. Declaration and submission

After a final OTP, the Udyam Registration Number is issued and the e-certificate can be downloaded.

Keep the registered mobile number and email active; they are used for later updates.

Common Udyam Problems and How They Are Fixed

Most of the requests we see are not new registrations but corrections. Wrong details can block a loan or a scheme claim later.

Common Udyam Registration issues
Problem Why it matters Usual fix
Wrong or missing NIC activity code Schemes and lenders check the activity; a trading code on a manufacturing unit can make you ineligible Update the activity and NIC codes on the portal
Category looks wrong Classification decides which scheme and priority-lending rules apply Check the ITR and GST figures the portal has used; update investment details where needed
Old or duplicate registration (UAM or two Udyam numbers) Only one Udyam Registration is allowed per PAN Keep one valid registration; the others should be cancelled
Business changed: new address, partners, bank or GSTIN Details must match your KYC and loan documents Update the registration online using the registered Aadhaar
Informal micro enterprise without PAN or GST It cannot register on the regular Udyam portal The Udyam Assist Platform, through designated intermediaries, issues a certificate for such units

Portal features change from time to time; always confirm on udyamregistration.gov.in.

What Are the Benefits of Udyam Registration?

Access to MSME credit

Priority sector lending, collateral-free options such as CGTMSE cover and MSME-specific loan products.

Government schemes

Most central schemes, including ZED certification and many state subsidies, ask for Udyam.

Protection on delayed payments

Micro and small suppliers can use the MSMED Act remedies. See delayed payment help.

Public procurement

Registered micro and small enterprises get benefits under the Public Procurement Policy, such as EMD exemption.

Tender and B2B credibility

Buyers and platforms such as GeM use Udyam to confirm MSME status.

A starting point for other registrations

NSIC registration and several state incentives need a valid Udyam number first.

What GRO-MSME Does, and What It Does Not Do

GRO-MSME helps you

  • Check which category your business will fall into
  • Choose the right activity and NIC codes
  • Complete a new registration with you on the official portal
  • Update or correct an existing registration
  • Understand which loans and schemes the certificate opens up

GRO-MSME does not

  • Charge any government fee: there is none
  • Issue certificates; only the Udyam portal does
  • Change how the portal calculates your category from ITR and GST data
  • Promise a loan or subsidy because you are registered

Beware of websites that look official and charge for Udyam Registration. The only official portal is udyamregistration.gov.in.

How to Get Started with GRO-MSME

Share your PAN type, activity and whether you already hold an Udyam or older Udyog Aadhaar number. We check your category and the codes that fit your business, then complete or update the registration with you, using your own Aadhaar OTP. If you also need GST registration or NSIC registration, we plan the order so the details match everywhere.

Early Grow Advisory Services, which powers GRO-MSME, describes the same service on its Udyam Registration page.
